September 25-29

READING 7:
This week, students will continue working through connecting the process of close reading to the beginning stages of writing a Text Dependent Analysis response (TDA). We will continue working in groups and partners to find evidence in the text to support our answers and write explanations that show how our evidence proves our answer. We will also move towards working independently, preparing ourselves for our first rubric-assessed TDA during the first week of October. Any homework will be posted here at the end of each class period and will most likely be any work left over from class.

ENGLISH 9:
We will continue our study of "The Immigrant Contribution" this week, examining the connection between word choice and author's purpose, persuasive appeals, diction, and sentence structure.  Any homework will be posted here at the end of each class period.
TUESDAY HW: Finish vocabulary work on page 32. Complete on separate sheet of paper. Will be collected for accuracy.
WEDNESDAY HW: Finish "Analyze the Text" on page 30 if not finished in class.

September 19-22

READING 7:

WEDNESDAY: Period 1 - Finish TDA deconstruction if not finished in class.
THURSDAY: Period 3 & 4 - Finish final draft of TDA if not finished in class.


ENGLISH 9:
We will begin wrapping up our study of "A Quilty of a Country" with our focus on word choice and connotation and the impact these elements have on mood, tone, and author's purpose. Students will have a selection test (open book) on Wednesday. We will review our answers and make corrections on Wednesday before diving into our next piece, "The Immigrant Contribution" on Thursday. On Friday, students will have the opportunity to complete test corrections.  Any homework will be posted here at the end of each class period.
MONDAY HW: Finish Author's Style on pg. 21 (use worksheet provided in class) if not finished in class.
TUESDAY HW: Review notes for test tomorrow. It might be helpful to re-read "A Quilt of a Country" as a refresher.
WEDNESDAY: Open-book test on "A Quilt of a Country."
THURSDAY HW: Finish reading "The Immigrant Contribution" (pg. 23-29). Complete comprehension check questions for MONDAY.

September 11- 15

READING 7:
On Monday and Tuesday, students will be taking CDTs. On Wednesday, students will be reviewing their CDT results and goal setting. The remainder of the week students will begin connecting the process of close reading to the beginning stages of writing a Text Dependent Analysis response (TDA).

Thursday HW: Finish reading "A Keen Sense" in blue CDT  packet if not finished in class.

ENGLISH 9:
On Monday and Tuesday, students will be taking CDTs. On Wednesday, students will review their CDT results and work on their second read and text analysis of "A Quilt of a Country."  We will continue through the "American Voices" unit noting elements of nonfiction narratives. We will continue working with word choice and connotation and looking at the impact these elements have on mood, tone, and author's purpose. Any homework will be posted here at the end of each class period.

Wednesday HW: Finish "Analyze the Text" on page 18 if not finished in class. Each response must be supported with evidence from the text.
Friday HW: Finish blue Craft & Structure worksheet and vocabulary work on page 20 if not finished in class. PLEASE do not just write down definitions of the concept vocab words. You will be doing more work than you need to. Test on Wednesday.

September 4-8

READING 7:
This week there will be no assigned homework. In class, we will be working on making our reading process visible through talking to the text and close reading. Students will be submitting evidence of close reading on the texts we practice with in class.

ENGLISH 9:
This week there will be no assigned homework. In class, we will begin reading nonfiction narratives in our textbook to begin identifying elements of nonfiction narratives in order to prepare ourselves to write one of our own. Students will be submitting work that asks them to comprehend and analyze the selected texts as well as consider the craft and structure of the texts.

August 28-September 1

This week, students will be introduced to the policies and procedures of Intensive Reading 7. We will complete inquiry activities in class and begin working on written responses to open-ended questions by repeating the prompt.

Students' only homework this week is to take their syllabus home, review information with parents, and return signed by Friday, September 8.

May 29-31

Period 5, 6, 7, 8: In class - End of year wrap-up.
